Why the smell keeps coming back
The spot you see is the smallest part of the problem
When a dog or cat urinates on carpet, the liquid spreads as it falls. A circle the size of a saucer on top can be the size of a dinner plate in the padding below. Then it dries, and drying is the real trouble: the water leaves and the salts and proteins stay, bonded to the fiber, the backing and the padding.
Those leftovers are what you smell, and they are patient. A store spray perfumes the surface for a few days. A rental machine rinses the top of the pile and pushes more liquid downward. Even a good carpet cleaning on its own only reaches the fibers, so the source below keeps sending the odor back up. Your technician starts by finding every affected area, including the ones you suspect but cannot see, and showing you what the treatment will do before anything is applied. Then the protein and enzyme treatment goes onto each spot in enough volume to follow the urine down, and it gets time to work.
The enzymes do what no perfume can: they digest the proteins and compounds that carry the smell, breaking them into pieces that have no odor at all. Once the treatment has done its work, the carpet is cleaned with our low-moisture process, which lifts the broken-down residue out on absorbent pads. The room is dry in about an hour, and what is left behind is clean fiber with nothing in it to smell.

Why does the pet smell come back after I clean the spot myself?
Because the spray only reached the top. Urine runs down through the carpet fibers into the backing and the padding underneath, and as it dries it leaves salts and proteins behind at every level. A deodorizer perfumes the surface for a few days while the source sits untouched below it, so the smell returns as soon as the perfume fades. Our protein and enzyme treatment is made to break that source down where it settled.
What exactly is the protein and enzyme treatment?
A professional product that digests the proteins and other compounds in dried urine, turning them into harmless pieces that no longer smell and that the cleaning then lifts out. The technician applies it to each affected area and gives it time to work before the carpet is cleaned. It is non-toxic, and once the carpet is dry, about an hour later, kids and pets can be back on it.
Does the treatment work on cat urine as well as dog urine?
Yes. Cat urine is more concentrated, which is why it smells sharper and lasts longer, and cats tend to leave it in repeat spots along walls and behind furniture. The enzyme treatment breaks cat urine down the same way it does a dog's. Tell the technician where the cat tends to go, including any spots you only suspect, so nothing gets skipped.
