More about rug cleaning

Why we clean it where it lies

The rug never leaves the room

A rug that goes off to be washed is a rug you live without for a week or more, plus a bare patch of floor and a wait for the delivery. Ours stays home. The technician cleans it in your home, on your own floor, during the carpet appointment itself, and you see the result before the van is packed.

It starts with a close look. Fiber, dyes, fringe, backing and any thin or worn areas all get checked, and you hear what the clean will do before it begins. A rug with a problem an in-home clean cannot fix is pointed out, not cleaned and hoped for.

Fiber by fiber

Synthetic, wool and cotton, each handled its own way

Synthetic rugs

Polypropylene, polyester and nylon rugs are the everyday workhorses under dining tables and in family rooms. They take a thorough clean well, and traffic lanes and food spills usually come out completely.

Wool rugs

Wool hides soil and holds dye beautifully, and it hates being soaked. Our low-moisture approach suits it: the fibers are left barely damp, the colors stay where they belong, and the rug keeps its hand.

Cotton rugs and flatweaves

Cotton soaks up spills fast and shows them. A measured amount of solution and patient pad work lift the soil without saturating the weave, so the rug dries flat and even.

The process on a rug

Low moisture matters even more with a floor underneath

Carpet has a backing and a cushion to hide moisture in. A rug has your floor under it, and nothing should soak through to that. The technician meters the solution to the soil, no more than the rug needs, then works absorbent pads across the pile. The pads pick up the loosened dirt, and fresh ones go on until they come up clean.

The fringe is cleaned gently by hand and combed straight. The pile is groomed in one direction so it dries evenly and looks finished. In about an hour the rug is dry, back under the coffee table, and holding its color the way it did when it was new to you.

Pets and rugs

The accident that happened on the good rug

Rugs catch more than their share of pet accidents, because a rug is where the dog settles. Urine soaks into the fibers and the backing, and a store spray only perfumes the top of it. Our protein and enzyme treatment goes after the source and breaks it down where it lies, so the smell leaves with it.

Every pet treatment carries our 100% pet odor removal guarantee: notice the odor again and we re-treat the rug free. The full story is on our pet stain and odor removal page.

When a rug needs more than an in-home clean

Honest about the rare exceptions

Nearly every rug we see is cleaned beautifully on your floor. Once in a while one needs a full immersion wash at a rug plant: a very delicate piece, or one that has soaked up more than a surface clean can reach. In the Birmingham area, plant washing with free pickup and delivery is handled by our sister company, Rug Runners Rug Cleaning. In every market, your technician tells you which kind of rug you have before any work starts.

Our guarantee

Satisfaction guaranteed, rug included

The rug is covered by the same promise as the carpet it sits on. Show the technician anything you would like done over and it is cleaned again at no charge, and if a second attempt still does not come right, that work costs you nothing. Love the clean or it's free, and that holds in every one of our seven markets.

Rug questions

What people ask before they book

Do you take the rug away to clean it?

No. In every LocalPro market the rug stays on your own floor and is cleaned right there, as part of the carpet visit. You never go a week without the rug in the room, there is no rolling it up for a van, and you watch the result appear in front of you. The technician looks the rug over first and tells you plainly what an in-home clean will and will not do for it.

Can you clean wool rugs with the low-moisture process?

Yes, and wool responds well to a low-moisture clean. Wool holds a lot of water if you let it, and a soaked wool rug can take days to dry, shrink or bleed its dyes. Our process puts in very little moisture, works the soil out with absorbent pads and leaves the fibers damp at most. The technician checks the dyes and the condition of the rug before choosing how to treat it.

What happens to the fringe during a rug cleaning?

The fringe gets its own attention. It is usually cotton, it grays faster than the body of the rug, and it tangles if it is handled roughly. Your technician cleans it gently by hand, combs it straight and lays it flat to dry so it finishes looking like part of the rug again, not an afterthought.

Can you get a pet accident out of an area rug?

In most cases, yes. A rug is a smaller target than a room of carpet, and the protein and enzyme treatment works the same way on it: it breaks the urine down where it soaked in, so the odor goes with it. Pet treatments on rugs carry our 100% pet odor removal guarantee: should the smell return, the rug is re-treated at no charge.

How long does an area rug take to dry?

About an hour for most rugs, no longer than the carpet they sit on, since so little moisture goes in. Thicker wool pieces can take a little longer. Keep foot traffic off the rug until it feels dry to the touch, then put the furniture back and use the room as normal.

Is a rug cleaned with the same process as the carpet?

The same low-moisture process, adjusted for the rug. The technician matches the solution and the pressure to the fiber, works more carefully around fringe, binding and any worn spots, and keeps the moisture low enough that nothing soaks through to the floor beneath. Synthetic, wool and cotton rugs are all cleaned this way in every one of our markets.
